Reviewing today a Kevyn Aucoin product for you, one which is from the original line created by Kevyn Aucoin himself. I was super excited to try this, as I am with most of the products from his line. I have been using this, along with a couple other products from his line for over a year now and thought it was time to pen down the review. So, let us find out about it.

How to Use:
For a classic, subtle look, line only the upper lid and blend.
For added definition, line the entire eye.

My Experience with Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Pencil Primatif Defining Navy:

Packaging: The Kevyn Aucoin Primatif is a regular sharpen-able wooden type pencil. It comes packaged in the usual golden outer cardboard box.

Shade: The shade “Defining Navy” is a deep dark navy blue. It is a matte shade. Despite being so dark and deep, I feel that the shade is still able to stand out without being obtrusive or jarring on the face. It can be an easy variation to your regular black or brown kohl liner. It is a colour which despite being “colourful (as in non-neutral)” could still be sued in a office/corporate setting.

Texture:  The Primatif eye pencil is the kohl version from Kevyn Aucoin. The texture is smooth and creamy but not too emollient – more like a dry version. It is not hard or brittle. It applies fairly smoothly on the skin/lash line/waterline – there is no tug or pull on the skin. This aspect is generally a cause of concern for me since I have texture on my lids with fine lines and application of any liner product can turn out to be a pain as it moves over the ageing lids. And it gets even worse when the product itself has a hard or dry texture. Also, the product is a kohl– which means it is meant to be smudged. So, you want the texture to be emollient enough to be able to consciously smudge it and blend it, but not so creamy that it smudges away to nothingness or moves and transfers. This one fits the bill to a “T.” The product is smooth enough to glide over the skin but not too emollient. Also, it is fairly easy to build up or blend out as one desires. I have had this one for more than a year – you can see the size of the pencil left. The texture is still smooth and creamy. It tends to dry up on the top layer a little. A quick round of sharpening, exposing fresh product – and I am good to go again.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is good but not even. So, while the pencil does not tug on the skin, the pigment does skip as the pencil is gliding along, but it is nothing too bad. The pigmentation can be easily built up in a couple of swipes or by doing the usual short strokes.

Lasting Power:  Being a kohl, it is likely to smudge and transfer a little, but if you don’t overbuild it or apply on the waterline – this can stay put for long. Also, once blended out or smudged, it gives good wear time and make for a nice base for a blue smokey eye look. You will need to remove it with a waterproof makeup remover. It will not come off otherwise.

Cons of Kevyn Aucoin The Eye Pencil Primatif Defining Navy:

• The pigment skips when applying but easy to even out by building up in a couple of swipes.
